Many people assume that if someone is successful it is because they have good leadership skills. Some people assume that if a business is successful it is because it has good leaders. Leadership isn’t something that is particularly easy to pass on to other people. Sometimes a corporation is successful because the previous leader who were very skilled in leadership and the present leader simply has kept things running the same as before.
What is Business Leadership?
Leadership in business can be defined as the capacity of a company’s management to set and achieve company goals, take fast and decisive action when needed, outperform the competition as well as inspire others to perform at the highest level they can.
Excellent leadership is a rare skill. For many individuals it does not come naturally. It is amazing how many companies are successful even though they have only marginally competent individuals leading them. Many a times, it is because the organization structure helps make-up for the short comings of a leader. In some cases, it is because a specific talented staff that could be making up for the leaders’ deficiencies.
For some reason we often assume that a company that is successful achieves that success due to the top leader’s efforts. We forget that often timing can be everything, like being in the right industry at the right time; so success happens despite poor leadership.
Any leadership training program should take into account some of the basic facts, that many individuals should be coached to develop his leadership skill and techniques. Anyone can learn leadership skills, and excellent leadership skills can make someone successful, but the inverse is not true. Being successful does not make you a great leader. If you intend to be a leader, ensure you are looking for people who actually have the leadership skills that you aspire to have and not just someone who is successful.
