Sandy has a website where she designs and sells jewelry.

Roman works at Global Popstar Design as a Creative Director.

Sandy, as a jewelry designer, has always possessed an artistic bent for design.

Seeing a need to address a daily issue, she began conceptualizing Mr. Poncho. When Sandy described her design concept to Roman, he immediately agreed.

She devised a sleeve cover that was improved by the addition of a rubber cup.

The user then wraps the headphone cord around the cup’s centre and folds back the corners to secure it.

Sandy began manufacturing them herself and, with the assistance of Roman, began selling them online and fulfilling orders from their flat.

After grossing around $45,000.00 over two years, they recognized the potential for growth; nonetheless, they sought financing largely to establish an office outside of their residence.

With this in mind, they began searching for investors.

Sandy Hyun and Roman Pietrs enter Shark Tank in exchange for $50,000 and a 25% share in Mr. Poncho. This results in a value of $200,000.

They use a musical introduction to attempt to calm the vicious Sharks.

They chant the product’s name, which leaves the Sharks somewhat amused and perplexed.

Robert Herjavec expresses his admiration for Pietrs’ singing ability.

The duo promptly gets to work, presenting their goods and giving sharks samples.

Kevin O’Leary is inquiring as to whether the entrepreneurs have a patent on their invention.

Pietrs notes that they have a pending patent on the device but not on the cup — a critical component of the Mr. Poncho instances.

While the pair has had some success, selling over 5,000 pieces, the Sharks are looking for more specific information.

Kevin Harrington inquires as to the manufacturing cost of the Mr. Poncho and the sale price.

With a material cost of $3 and a sales price of $18, it’s obvious that the pair priced their goods to sell and profit.

Daymond John is inquiring as to whether they have conducted market research on manufacturers for mass manufacturing. He want to know the wholesale price of the Mr. Poncho.

Huyn estimates the manufacturing cost to be “around $1,” based on the cost of the supplies, but the pair has not done their investigation.

Robert Herjavec states that he is opposed to the product since his children wouldn’t purchase it. Due to the lack of a patent on the cup, he is out.

Barbara Corcoran also left citing that the product lack patent.

Kevin O’Leary advises the pair not to “leave your day jobs.” He has departed.

Daymond John refers to the venture as “premature.” He then exits, pointing out various things that the product is missing.

Kevin Harrington feels the pair has a “wonderful home company,” but he does not believe he can invest in it. The final Shark exits the Shark Tank, and the couple exits without a contract from the Sharks.

Mr. Poncho after the Shark Tank Pitch

They continued to sell their Mr. Poncho product directly through websites such as Esty, but their ambition of mass manufacturing was hampered by their lack of a proprietary patent on the primary component of their Mr. Poncho cases.

Mr. Poncho has ceased operations, but Sandy continues to sell her jewelry collection online and in hundreds of retail locations nationwide, including Anthropologie, Neiman Marcus, Nordstrom, and several small, independent jewelers and shopkeepers.

Sandy earns around $1 million per year from her jewelry as of July 2021, and Roman is a Creative Director at Global Popstar Design.
