Susan Knapp was the creator of A Perfect Pear, a gourmet food company. She wanted to create a food “gift set” that featured a single ingredient, the pear.

However production of the Perfect Pear was difficult and time-consuming, therefore she called on her friends at The Distillery in Hawaii where they are experts at turning fruit into perfectly-aged booze.

Who is the founder of A Perfect Pear?

Susan Knapp founded The Perfect Pear out of her passion for cooking and a single product, Cinnamon Pear Jelly.

Susan recognized a market for pear goods in the late 1990’s and decided to build a range of items in addition to her jelly.

Susan earned multiple medals at events such as the California State Fair in Sacramento as a consequence.

These accolades, together with Susan’s consumers’ enthusiasm for her high-quality food items, enabled Susan to develop her concept and make it into a viable business. Susan’s work and enthusiasm enabled her to expand her firm in early 2000.

Although she had won medals at County Fairs and other local events, Knapp was unaware of the popularity of her Cinnamon Pear Jelly until her mother was ill with cancer the following year.

Knapp put her typical jelly-making activities on hold that year to care for her mother. She was taken aback by her coworkers’ and friends’ dismay when her jelly failed to appear around the holidays. Knapp recognized for the first time that she could have stumbled across a commercial product.

What Happened to A Perfect Pear at Shark Tank pitch?

The Sharks get a taste of Susan Knapp and her product line, A Perfect Pear, in episode 102. Her business requires a Shark deal in order to continue developing.

Knapp entered the Shark Tank in seeking $500,000 in exchange for a 15% stake in her firm, which worth $3.3 million.

Kevin O’Leary displays surprise with Knapp’s stats and inquires, “But, do you have sales?” Knapp says that they had sold almost $700,000 worth of merchandise. O’Leary was taken aback.

Kevin Harrington inquires about profit margins. Knapp responds that net profit was 2%, but she anticipates earnings to increase to above 10% in a year.

The items were sold in over 650 locations, and Knapp had over $100,000 in unfilled orders due to a lack of funding to support her manufacturing.

She says that the country’s credit freeze has restricted her financial options. The Sharks agreed that the loan crisis has produced difficulties for a large number of businesses.

Kevin O’Leary reduces the debate to numbers. He offers Knapp $500,000 in exchange for 70% of the company’s stake.

She respectfully declines him instantly. Daymond John offers $500,000 in exchange for a 51% stake in the business. Kevin Harrington takes a stand. He offered $500,000 for a 50% stake.

Robert Herjavec proposes to partner with Harrington in his deal. The 50% equity would leave Knapp with an equal ownership in her business.

“He would not give up the 70% ownership,” O’Leary explains, “since it would mean you would get to work with him, Mr. Wonderful.”

The Sharks were on a feeding frenzy, with everyone vying for a piece of Knapp’s company.

Knapp was weighing the offers. Each would make her an offer of $500,000. O’Leary was seeking a 70% ownership. John was seeking a 51%, while Herjavec and Harrington are seeking a 50% stake.

Knapp wishes to keep control and offers Herjavec and Harrington a 49% ownership in her firm, but they decline, citing that she wishes to retain control.

She hesitates briefly before accepting Herjavec and Harrington’s offer of $500,000 for 50% equity shares and exited the pitch with a deal.
