What Happened to Zinepak after the Shark Tank Pitch?

A classic West Virginia hot dog consists of a wiener (or frank) on a steamed bun with chili, coleslaw, onions, and mustard; some people also add cheese.

Custard Stand Food Products may be too mild for certain West Virginia hot dog connoisseurs, but it’s better to be too mild than too spicy: you can always spice something up – you can’t spice it down!

Who is the founder of Custard Stand Hot Dog Chili?

Custard Stand Hot Dog Chili was founded by Dee and Angie Cowger, husband and wife. In 1991, the Cowgers launched their first hot dog business, The Custard Stand.

They’d been serving hot dogs and ice cream in Webster Springs, West Virginia, for over a decade, and their family recipe chili sauce was a big favorite with customers.

Following years of consumer demands, the Cowgers began packaging and selling their chili in 2003 from a car wash behind their stand, which they later transformed into a USDA-approved manufacturing facility.

Since then, they’ve added a second shop in Flatwoods, WV, and have a franchisee running four more stores in Danville, Elkins, Mannington, and Oak Hill, WV.

Their business is expanding on both ends: their chili can be found in 15 states across the Midwest and southern east coast at Kroger, Wal-Mart, Sam’s Club, IGA, and dozens of mom and pop businesses. They also sell their chili to other restaurants.

What Happened to Custard Stand Hot Dog Chili at Shark Tank pitch?

When Dee and Angie Cowger pitch in Shark Tank’s “Made in America” special, episode 718, they hope the Sharks appreciate Custard Stand Food Products, their brand of all-beef chili and chili soup.

The Cowgers wanted a Shark to help them develop their production capability (now 4000 pounds per day) and become a national brand.

Dee and Angie begin with a section at home. They were high school sweethearts, and they have three children, one grandchild, and two more on the way.

The Custard Stand first opened its doors 24 years ago. Customers enjoy the place’s homey atmosphere. Their most popular product is the chili. They want the Sharks’ investment to be a national enterprise.

The pair entered the Shark Tank pitch seeking $400,000 for a 10% stake in their firm, which worth $4 million.

They describe their restaurant’s history. The most popular items are chili dogs. Angie’s grandmother gave her the recipe. There are no fillers or chemicals, and Angie claims that “you can pronounce every single component on the packaging.”

They offer out chili and explain that it doesn’t have beans, but the chili soup does, and it’s hotter. They made $1.6 million in a year and made $217,000 profit by selling at regional retailers. They have a localized product, but they aspire to be a national brand.

Daymond enjoys the chili but is concerned about the $400,000 price tag. He claims that in order to maintain the integrity of their product, they must do Rand D, open stores, and market. He believes that $400,000 is insufficient. He’s out.

When the Cowgers explain that they are in debt for $700,000, the Sharks lend them money. The shop is responsible for $300,000 of the debt, while the chili business is responsible for $400,000 of the debt.

Lori says they’re doing a fantastic job, but she prefers spicy chili, so she’s out.

Robert believes they’re killing it, but it’ll be difficult to roll it out nationally; he’s out. Kevin claims that a major player would pay $1 million for their company; he believes it isn’t worth $4 million, therefore he’s out.

They are multimillionaires, according to Mark, and everyone wants to be “that couple.” Mark applauds, but there are too many moving pieces for him to stay.

In his final words to the Cowgers, he says, “you are everything that everyone who watches this program hopes to be.” They are disappointed in the hall, but they believe they will take strength from it. Finally, the pair left the pitch without a deal.
