What is a FedEx Delivery Exception?
An exception occurs when a package is temporarily delayed while in transit. Since every attempt is made to deliver every product as soon as possible, an exception does not always indicate a late shipment. The status exception explains the most recent exception in the scan activity section.
When a package is returned to a delivery station for the night because it was undeliverable during the courier’s route, it is referred to as a “PMX.” A delivery exception can occur as a result of the package being incorrectly addressed, and a recipient is unavailable, and so on. Many times, delivery is re-attempted the next day.
What are the Common Causes of FedEx Delivery Exceptions?
Federal holidays
Shipments may be delayed if a Federal holiday occurs when a shipment is in transit, either in the country of origin or the destination country. Shipping companies are closed if it is a federal holiday. It is not unusual for carriers to be further delayed as a result of having to play catch up due to a backlog of shipments because of the day off.
A custom delay
The shipping industry is required to hold shipments for release via customs in order to comply with regulations. There are sometimes delays in the process, especially when packages have to be inspected for a long time.
An air freight delay
Airfreight is one of the fastest modes of transport, but it can still be delayed. A plane may be late because of weather or maintenance being done on its propulsion system. Sometimes, planes may not show up at all because of customs releases and other paperwork catching up with them.
A package is returned to the delivery station.
Sometimes, there could be a problem with a package sent by courier. If merchandise was damaged or dumped in a chute, it may be taken back to the delivery station for examination.
An address is wrong
Sometimes an address provided by the customer is incorrect. There may have been an error printing the label, or there could have been a typo in the name.
An unknown recipient
Sometimes, there is a problem with delivery to the intended recipient. This may be due to the inability of someone to pick up the package or because of a lack of contact information.
A package is not sent to the right address.
A call center employee can make a mistake while transcribing an address. This may be because they did not focus on it and may have seen it as unnecessary information used for easier searching purposes on a computer screen.
Weather conditions
When you ship during the winter months, there is often a delay because of the weather. This can occur in any part of the country, but it is most severe in the Midwest and Northeast.
Customer Not Available or Business Closed
What does delivery exception mean customer not available?
A delivery exception means the package was not delivered, but the courier did make an attempt. When FedEx attempts to deliver a package to your home but you are unavailable or not at home to receive it, a customer not available message is often shown on the FedEx tracking page.
What does business closed mean?
When FedEx attempts to deliver the package to an office address or business agency that is closed, the message “business closed” is often displayed. That may be because it is after business hours or because it is a holiday or weekend.
It can also be shown if the delivery person is having difficulty delivering the package on time. The delivery person will often contact you if this happens.
Note: The recipient’s business was closed, or the recipient was unavailable. FedEx will make an effort to deliver the shipment the next business day.
