The company was valued at a whopping $3 million when it appeared on Shark Tank, but the Sharks were unimpressed with the sales numbers so far. The pair has garnered $600,000 in investments so far, in return for 16% of the company.

What is Muddy Water Camo? Who is the founder of Muddy Water Camo?

Muddy Water Camo is a company that focuses on developing high-quality camouflage patterns that are extremely difficult to detect through a camera lens, particularly in swampy locations that are often used for duck hunting.

This kind of camouflage enhances the hunter’s flexibility in various terrains and was one of the earliest of its kind.

The new material offered by Muddy Water Camo distinguishes itself from other types of camouflage on the market by providing exceptional concealment and protection from waterfowl rather than deer.

The camouflage patterns have been designed to replicate flooded fields, chopped corn, cattails, and marsh grass, all of which are common in duck hunting environments.

Muddy Water Camo was founded by Steve Maloney and Steven Kirkpatrick, both of whom have a passion for duck hunting.

Kirkpatrick, a well-known wildlife photographer, spent over 1,000 hours perfecting the Muddy Water Camo patterns.

Together with Maloney, they came up with a method for using real-world landscape photographs to create realistic camouflage patterns for their hunting gear.

Maloney, who had been looking for better concealment during his duck hunting expeditions about five years ago, teamed up with Kirkpatrick and came up with a patented technology that can simulate any landscape, including marshes, forests, and meadows.

Muddy Water Camo designs are available on clothing, gear, automobiles, boats, and home décor, among other products.

Muddy Water Camo Shark Tank Pitch

In episode 416 of Shark Tank, Muddy Water Camo made an appearance seeking a Shark to help them acquire a license for their unique hunting camouflage.

Steve Maloney and Stephen Kirkpatrick pitched their business, asking for a $150,000 investment for a 5% stake in their $3 million company.

Maloney explained that they wanted to revolutionize the hunting industry with their innovative approach to pattern creation.

During their presentation, Kirkpatrick emerged from a marsh section to showcase their product. They displayed a photo of themselves hunting in camouflage, which they claim is based on real-world imagery and provides a more realistic pattern to fool wildlife.

The Sharks were given sample hats to try on, and Kevin O’Leary expressed concern about the product’s potential success in the market. However, the couple assured the Sharks that their product was superior to existing options.

Despite their $3 million valuation, the Sharks were disappointed with Muddy Water Camo’s sales results, which amounted to only $150,000 in their first year.

The couple had also raised $600,000 in exchange for a 16% stake in the business, and their product was available at 58 retail locations, but not in any large hunting stores.

Robert Herjavec was not convinced that the $3 million valuation was reasonable and chose to pass. Lori Greiner praised the concept but felt that the requested amount was too high and also declined to invest.

Daymond John believed that the couple’s valuation was unrealistic and left without making an offer, while Mark Cuban thought that the 5% stake was not enough and also declined to invest.

Kevin O’Leary offered the couple $150,000 for a 20% equity stake, but the couple declined the offer, stating that they would not accept a lower valuation.

Despite leaving the show without a deal, Muddy Water Camo gained significant publicity and support following their appearance on Shark Tank.

The couple received a meeting with Louisiana Governor Phil Bryant, and their product attracted interest from several large camouflage producers.

However, in 2015, Kirkpatrick filed a lawsuit against the other investors, including former baseball player Will “the Thrill” Clark, alleging that he was cheated out of his patent.

The company changed its name to Clear Image Camo in 2016, and the business ceased operations in 2019. While Maloney still designates himself as the company’s president on his LinkedIn profile, Kirkpatrick does not mention the business on his profile.

As of January 2022, Muddy Water Camo products were no longer available for sale on Amazon.
